***NO HUNTING SEPTEMBER 5-6...LANDOWNER IS HAVING A FAMILY EVENT ON THE PROPERTY***
From the moment you pull off the highway and go up to the electric security gate, you realize this place is special. In front of you is a winding gravel driveway. On either side is native prairie grass. Off in the distance you see a couple of crop fields through the trees. Beyond that is more trees and then the Kansas Flint Hills rising up to the heavens.
Going down the driveway, you see a trail going up over the hill to your right. This takes you to an old hay meadow. Instead, you follow the driveway down the hill into what becomes a walnut orchard. Everything is mowed, but not to perfection; just enough to provide easy access and good visibility of that monster buck you expect to see every time you look down a different row. You take a left in the middle of the grove and then a right. You are now in the middle of the creek bed. This is Mill Creek. It is dry along the driveway, but there are some good sized water holes to the north and south. You follow the driveway as it starts to parallel the creek and heads up the hill. It opens up to a crop field to your right and then to your left. You know there are deer hiding in there. There's an old barn, a house, and then the bunkhouse. You follow the trail around the back, crops on one side, a smaller branch of the creek and more walnuts on the other. There are numerous scrapes and rubs. The trail turns into the woods and heads up into the hills. There is another trail going to your right, leading to more walnuts. Oaks and cedars are also plentiful. You look up just in time to see a big bodied deer, complete with a full set of antlers, rising from his bed and disappearing in the brush. The trail keeps climbing and climbing until you come out of the trees. Below you is the forest you came out of, and from up here you can see all the fingers of trees and brush that feed into it. Beyond that is the crops, the creek, the driveway and the highway, where you started, over a mile away. You stop for a minute and dream about shooting a monster Kansas buck as it sneaks across the hillside 100 yards across from you. What more could you want?
And by the way, a deer that grossed 215" was found on one of the neighbors in 2016.
